How to achieve the best Camera Angles for your Horror Film Knowing Your Scene In order to have a chance for the best angles on your horror film, knowing how to speak to your targeted audience is a good way of understanding how to film your shot. By doing this you can achieve the scene you are trying to create in the best way possible. Once this is figured out, looking at the shadows and lighting you want to create is another way to enhance your visuals. Casting A Shot Creating a shadow is one of the most powerful tools to reveal or conceal a mystery and by doing so it can hint at any lurking dangers. Using lighting on shadows can instantly change a scene from ordinary to frightening. It could even spread a bigger meaning as trying to express the theme of something. This is a great way to heighten the terror for the viewer just with controlling the deaths of the lighting to apply effect towards shadowing. Once you reach the desired goal you’re looking for, figuring out what angles you want to use to shoot your scene is next based on the position you’re in. if you’re trying to create a sense of claustrophobia and intensify fear, then either doing close-ups of facial features like zooming into something specific like perhaps the eyes then tight framing is the best choice. A good example of this is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, because it does a lot of facial closeups in the way they create this by capturing the terror of the character being shown. The movie Lights Out (2016) is a prime example of using shadows and lighting to create a suspenseful take because it premises around that. The fear is based on the anticipation that is developed by the lingering moments of silence. When using a creature or object in a scene a low-angle shot will give a powerful perspective towards that thing while when switching scenes a high-angle shot will diminish that character making it seem smaller and weaker. If you want to create a balance for a scene, you can move from a cowboy shot to a medium shot and continue to pan down towards the character to allow the viewer to absorb what has been happening. When creating a dual scene, it’s best to do an over the shoulder shot instead of a two shot, so that way the focus because easier to be controlled. Honorable Mentions Great Movies that share this concept could include a classic film like The Shining (1980) because the use of wide-angle shots is able to construct the uneasy feeling that something is going to happen, but you don’t know what. The attention to detail that every frame has, is what allows the impact that it creates on the audience achieving the suspense it’s trying to create. Jeepers Creepers (2001) offers an immense use of lighting and shadows with the silhouettes. It creates with the supernatural creatures that are encountered. not only that, but it also gives the discussed feeling of watching the actions that are being captured. Without this, it wouldn’t have the same effect if it was in a brightly lit shot. Especially since the monster remained a mystery till the end of the movie and you only see small clips and hints beforehand. so, when it is revealed, the horror makes more of an effect on the audience. - Post Title: CGI is killing Movies
Blog Name: Bloody Disgusting Blog Title: Movies Trash's Revenge’ Will Use CGI to Resurrect Two ‘Return of the Living Dead’ Actors Blog Author: John Squires Date Published: January 21, 2025 Brief Description: The blog is talking about a new “meta project” called Trash Revenge, and how some of the old cast is reuniting back into this new movie. It talks about the members coming back and speaks about James Karen and Don Calfa being brought back as well with CGI as they have already both passed away IRL. It explains the controversy it caused due to the fact that it is a small budget movie and that not even a bigger budget movie like Alien: Romulus did that good of a job with the use of CGI in their movie. The bigger question is if bringing back actors who have passed away in real life is a good idea to have them be brought back, because that could have certain issues occur with that. Why I chose this Blog: I chose this blog because it talks about 2 of my favorite things, which is horror and CGI. It talks about one of my favorite movies that got me into the horror genre, and it brings up interesting points about actors and what their plan is for the new movie. I value that they are trying to bring back classic characters to their movie, but I believe that if there is no need for CGI then it should not be used. Firstly, it's a lot of money and most of the time it's not even perfect and it makes a movie look cheaper than it actually is. So, I am glad that the article can agree and acknowledge that it is not something that is needed and it draws me to it for that reason. Strengths: A good strength for this post is it has appealing pictures and even a video to watch. It has good quotations and has good facts but still keeps it simplified. The whole blog runs smoothly in general and is all a very good attention grabber. This could be taken as a logo because it appeals to the audience as well as gives evidence and reasoning to what it is trying to explain in the article. The whole site looks fun and has some cool art plus you are able to look at comments to see what other people are sharing, allowing readers to communicate is a great way to gain a loyal following that will bring more viewers in the long run. I as well see myself coming back to read their post. Areas of Improvement: While the blog does a good job of getting to their main point, they might also be able to add more information about the movie project and explain what is going on with that. Just because readers may not be informed about this movie and might need a little more background before being about to gain their own opinion on it. Other than that, I think everything else went smoothly and accomplished what it was trying to, it wasn't too much, and it wasn't too little. Blog Name: Severed Cinema Blog Title: Fearful Lessons: Analyzing Educational Themes in Classic Horror Movies! Blog Author: Clint Westwood Date Published: March 18, 2024 Brief Description: This Blog is talking about themes throughout horror movies and gives examples of films that have multiple themes or any recurring ones. It goes into detail explaining backgrounds and why the theme was significant in the film. It shows the reader how to understand these films in order to gain more of an appreciation as well as insight to what they are experiencing when watching. Why I chose this Blog: Reason for choosing this blog is because I like the way it is structured; it’s not a heavy read but still is filled with great information. The whole time it kept me hooked and talked about the classic horror genre which I enjoyed. It's perfect for my interest because it is analyzing themes and going deeper into classic films. The lessons being taught made me really want to pick this blog just because when you read it you can tell that it takes a whole production to make a film. Strengths: This blog was filled with information that would appeal to the horror audience, possibly making it a logo. It has a lot of reviews, so it definitely appealed to the audience in some sort of way. It also has key words that made this blog easy to find and fit the description that I was looking for. The information that was taught was backed up properly and was easy to understand the knowledge that they were providing. The organization was neat and had other posts on the sides to be clicked on if your attention was to be achieved, as well as has reviews too for any input. Plus, it’s more than just a blog, they have a podcast, comics, news, music, books, etc. so it carries more of a variety. Areas of Improvement: This blog does not need much improvement in my eyes so it's really just some nitpicky things. It could carry a little more color to their post, maybe make it look a little less bland. The blog seems to have everything else in check, hooking titles, attention grabbers, and is targeted to the audience they want. Grammar and punctuations are good as well plus it carries featured images and is well structured. - Post Title: What Secrets are Being Hidden?
Blog Name: The Film Fund Blog Title: The Secrets of Horror Movie Cinematography Blog Author: Eric Johnson Date Published: May 24, 2023 Brief Description: The blog talks about setting the stage for horror, and how cinematography is used to create suspense and terror. It talks about lighting and shadows showing what techniques are used. It gets into camera angles, showing what different angles do towards horror movies and explaining their meaning to how it's used to evoke fear. It gives examples at the end of movies that have used those certain techniques and how it showcased the scare factor that it is trying to give. Why I Chose this Blog: The reason I chose this blog was because I found it interesting how it talks about the different types of camera shots and angles that are used. It expresses how different scenes require a different angle and how it fits with its plots. This is one of my main interests with film cinematography, and it gives great examples of movies that have amazing cinematic shots and how angels play a key role in setting the tone for a certain scene. Strengths: The author goes into great detail about key points while remaining on task, the point gets across smoothly and you understand what is being told. This makes it easy for me and the readers to want to read the whole thing and have knowledge stick. That's why I believe it appeals to ethos because it sticks to the point and lays out the facts without dragging it and making it too long while still making it entertaining to read. Areas of Improvement: As far as improvements go, I think it has good organization. But maybe it could get confused for an article more than a blog even though it does talk to the audience and has a good hook it seems like it could be looked at as both. It does a good job of providing keywords and knows the audience it is trying to reach. Plus, it does a good job of being entertaining, at least to me the way it does not have too much writing but just enough.
